Brian May

Brian May, born 19 July 1947, is a British musician, singer, songwriter, and astrophysicist, best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen. His distinctive guitar sound and songwriting contributions were integral to the band's global success. Beyond music, May earned a PhD in astrophysics and is a science communicator.

Early Life

Born in Hampton, Middlesex, England, May developed a passion for music early, building his own guitar, the "Red Special," with his father at age 16. He studied physics and mathematics at Imperial College London.

Career

May co-founded Queen in 1970 with Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor. He wrote numerous hits for the band, including "We Will Rock You," "Tie Your Mother Down," and "Who Wants to Live Forever." His guitar work is characterized by layered harmonies and a unique tone. After Queen's initial run, May pursued a solo career, releasing albums like "Back to the Light" and "Another World." He also collaborated with other artists and continued touring. In the 2000s, he reunited with Roger Taylor and, later, Adam Lambert to continue performing as Queen + Adam Lambert.

Personal Life

May is married to actress Anita Dobson. He has children from a previous marriage. He is an animal rights advocate and a campaigner against badger culling.

Awards

May has received numerous awards and honors, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Queen and a CBE for services to music and charity. He has also received awards for his contributions to astronomy.
