Jamie Christopher Hewlett

Jamie Hewlett is a British comic artist, designer, and animator best known as the co-creator of the virtual band Gorillaz, alongside musician Damon Albarn. He is responsible for the visual aesthetic of the band, designing the characters and directing their music videos and other visual content.

Early Life

Born in Horsham, Sussex, England, Hewlett developed a passion for drawing from a young age. He attended Northbrook College Worthing where he studied illustration.

Career

Hewlett's early career involved creating the comic strip Tank Girl with Alan Martin. He later met Damon Albarn, and together they formed Gorillaz in 1998. Hewlett's distinctive style, blending influences from hip-hop, manga, and animation, defines the band's visual identity. Beyond Gorillaz, Hewlett has also worked on various other projects, including designing stage sets and creating artwork for exhibitions.

Personal Life

Hewlett was previously married to French actress Emma de Caunes. He currently resides in Paris.

Awards

Hewlett has received numerous awards for his work with Gorillaz, including Grammy Awards and MTV Video Music Awards. He also won the Designer of the Year award at the Design Museum's Design of the Year Awards in 2006.
