Will Champion

Will Champion is the drummer and backing vocalist for the British rock band Coldplay. While he had prior experience with piano, guitar, and bass, he learned to play the drums specifically for the band. He is known for his powerful and dynamic drumming style, which contributes significantly to Coldplay's signature sound.

Early Life

Born William Champion on July 31, 1978, in Southampton, Hampshire, England, Champion grew up with a musical background. His parents, both academics, exposed him to various genres, including folk, jazz, and classical music. He played piano, guitar, and bass in his youth.

Career

Champion joined Coldplay (then called Starfish) in 1997 at University College London. Despite having no prior drumming experience, he quickly learned and became an integral part of the band's sound. He has played drums on all of Coldplay's albums and is also a contributing songwriter and backing vocalist. Beyond drumming, he has occasionally played other instruments on recordings and live performances, including piano and acoustic guitar. He also sang lead vocals on the song "Death Will Never Conquer."

Champion is married to Marianne Dark, a teacher, and they have three children.
