Michael Carlyle Hall

Michael C. Hall is an American actor best known for his starring role as Dexter Morgan, a serial killer with a code, in the Showtime series Dexter. His portrayal of the complex character garnered critical acclaim and solidified his place as a prominent figure in television drama.

Early Life

Michael Carlyle Hall was born on February 1, 1971, in Raleigh, North Carolina. His father, William Carlyle Hall, worked for IBM, and his mother, Janice, was a mental health counselor. He graduated from Ravenscroft School in 1989 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal arts from Earlham College in 1993. He then went on to study acting at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 1996.

Career

Hall's career began on the stage, appearing in several off-Broadway productions. He gained wider recognition for his role as David Fisher in the HBO drama series Six Feet Under (2001-2005). His portrayal of the introspective funeral director earned him critical praise and several award nominations. He achieved even greater fame with his lead role in Dexter (2006-2014, 2021-2022). He also starred in the Broadway musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch and has appeared in films such as Gamer (2009) and In the Shadow of the Moon (2019).

Personal Life

Hall has been married three times. He was married to actress Amy Spanger from 2002 to 2007. He married his Dexter co-star Jennifer Carpenter in 2008; they divorced in 2011. He married Morgan Macgregor in 2015.

Awards

For his role in Dexter, Hall won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama in 2010 and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series in 2010.
