Sonia Manzano

Sonia Manzano is an American actress, writer, and speaker best known for her role as Maria on the children's television program Sesame Street for over 40 years.

Early Life

Born in the South Bronx, New York City, Manzano attended the High School of Performing Arts and later Carnegie Mellon University. Her interest in a career in the performing arts began in her teens.

Career

Manzano joined the cast of Sesame Street in 1971. In addition to acting, she wrote scripts for the show and co-created several characters. Beyond Sesame Street, she has authored children's books and written for other television programs.

Personal Life

Manzano is married to Richard Reagan and has one daughter. She retired from Sesame Street in 2015.

Manzano has received numerous awards for her work, including multiple Emmy Awards for Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series and a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award.
