James Alan Hetfield

James Hetfield, born August 3, 1963, is an American musician best known as the co-founder, lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and main songwriter for the heavy metal band Metallica. Early Life

Born in Downey, California, Hetfield's early life was marked by his parents' divorce and his mother's passing due to cancer when he was 16. He took piano lessons as a child before picking up the guitar. His musical influences included Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin.

Career

Hetfield co-founded Metallica in 1981 after responding to a classified ad placed by drummer Lars Ulrich. He has been the band's primary songwriter and frontman throughout their career, contributing to iconic albums like Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All. His distinctive downpicking style has become a hallmark of Metallica's sound.
