Amy Goodman was born in 1957 in Bay Shore, New York. Her father was an ophthalmologist, and her mother a social worker. She comes from a politically active family.

Goodman began her journalism career in radio at Pacifica Radio's WBAI in New York City. She gained national attention for her coverage of the East Timor independence movement. In 1996, she co-founded Democracy Now!, which has since become a prominent independent news source.
