Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, known professionally as Kendrick Lamar, is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer widely considered one of the most influential artists of his generation. His work is characterized by its conscious lyrics, complex storytelling, and exploration of themes like race, social injustice, and personal growth.

Early Life

Born on June 17, 1987, in Compton, California, Kendrick Lamar was exposed to gang violence and poverty at a young age. He found solace in writing poetry and stories, which eventually evolved into rapping. He attended Centennial High School in Compton.

Career

Lamar began his music career as a teenager, releasing mixtapes under the name K-Dot. He gained recognition with his 2010 mixtape Overly Dedicated and signed with Top Dawg Entertainment. His debut studio album, Section.80 (2011), further solidified his position in the hip-hop scene. He achieved mainstream success with his major-label debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012), which garnered critical acclaim and commercial success. Subsequent albums, including To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) and DAMN. (2017), cemented his status as a leading voice in contemporary music. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers followed in 2022.

Kendrick Lamar is engaged to Whitney Alford, his high school sweetheart. They have two children together.
