Stephen Carpenter was born on August 3, 1970, in Sacramento, California. He began playing guitar at age 15 after a skateboarding accident.

Career

Carpenter co-founded Deftones in 1988 with Chino Moreno, Abe Cunningham, and Dominic Garcia. He has been the band's guitarist throughout their career, contributing to all their studio albums, including Adrenaline (1995), Around the Fur (1997), White Pony (2000), and Ohms (2020). His innovative use of seven-string guitars helped popularize their use in heavy music.
