Michelle Zauner

Michelle Zauner is a Korean-American musician, director, and author, best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the indie rock band Japanese Breakfast. Beyond her musical pursuits, she has directed music videos and commercials, and penned the critically acclaimed memoir, Crying in H Mart.

Early Life

Michelle Zauner was born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in Eugene, Oregon.

Career

Zauner began her musical career playing drums in various bands before forming Japanese Breakfast as a solo project. The project evolved into a full band, gaining recognition for their dreamy, shoegaze-influenced sound and introspective lyrics. They have released several albums, including Psychopomp, Soft Sounds from Another Planet, and Jubilee. Zauner also composed the soundtrack for the video game Sable. Beyond music, she published her memoir Crying in H Mart in 2021, which later became a New York Times bestseller.

Personal Life

Michelle Zauner is married to Peter Bradley, the guitarist in Japanese Breakfast.

Awards
