John Deacon

John Deacon, the quiet bassist of Queen, provided the band's rhythmic foundation and contributed several hit songs. A self-taught musician with a degree in electronics, he joined Queen in 1971 and remained until the band's effective end following Freddie Mercury's death.

Early Life

Born John Richard Deacon on August 19, 1951, in Leicester, England, he developed an early interest in electronics and music. He formed his first band, The Opposition, while still in school.

Career

Deacon joined Queen in 1971, becoming the final piece of the iconic lineup. He quickly integrated, contributing his musical talents and technical skills. He wrote several of Queen's hits, including "You're My Best Friend," "Another One Bites the Dust," and "I Want to Break Free." Beyond songwriting, Deacon's bass playing provided a crucial, steady underpinning to Queen's dynamic sound. He also handled the band's finances.

Personal Life

Deacon married Veronica Tetzlaff in 1975. They have six children. Following Freddie Mercury's death, Deacon largely retired from the music industry, only appearing for a few tribute performances.
