Dr. Jim Yong Kim, physician and anthropologist, is best known as the former President of the World Bank Group (2012-2019) and 17th President of Dartmouth College (2009-2012). A co-founder of Partners In Health (PIH), he has dedicated his career to addressing global health disparities and advocating for health as a human right.
Early Life
Born in Seoul, South Korea, Kim immigrated to the United States with his family at age five. He grew up in Muscatine, Iowa, where his father was a dentist and his mother a philosopher. He excelled academically and went on to attend Brown University.
Career
Kim co-founded Partners In Health in 1987 while a student at Harvard Medical School. He served as PIH’s Executive Director from 1987 to 2003. He later directed the World Health Organization's HIV/AIDS department. In 2009, he became President of Dartmouth College. From 2012 to 2019, he served as President of the World Bank Group. He is currently Vice Chairman and Partner at Global Infrastructure Partners.
